Subject: RE: Timber thinning

Franklinton, LA
Based on $2.00 per mile trucking cost and 270 miles of travel per load, the cost will be $540.00 per load for hauling. In other words it will cost the logging contractor $21.60 per ton to haul a 25 ton load of logs. If the trucking cost is $2.50 per mile, the cost will be $27.00 per ton.

For comparison, if you were 20 miles from a paper mill, the cost would be $80.00 per load or $3.20 per ton.

If the logging contractor has good modern equipment such as a hydro ax, skidder, loader, and dozer, he will lose 4 - 6 hours of productivity moving equipment for a 25 acre job. If he does not have modern equipment, the logging cost will increase.

I would still suggest getting 2 or 3 more quotes. Also, can some of the logs be sent to a chip and saw mill?
