WC Indiana | What is the CEC or organic matter of your soil? If you are 3% OM or more you would probably be alright.
Are you no till in cover crop? that can require some early N?
In general they say you should have 40# of N before or at planting to get you to sidedress. I am on low OM soils so I put on 100bs if N early spring with NH3 and strip-till into this. Then I will come back with another 100 # of N sidedress. Again if you have higher organic matter you could probably drop this from 100 to 60 pounds.sidedress.
