NW Illinois Stephenson county | I vote for corn, you already have a head start on N and deep tillage (alfalfa roots) and has worked well for me several times.

I've no-tilled corn several times into killed hayfields with good success. In 2010, I baled 26 acres of hay in mid may and then no-tilled corn into it. Make sure it is dry enough so the slot closes. I kept hauling manure on it until the corn was 6 inches tall and the grass and alfalfa was 8-12 inches tall and then had it sprayed with round-up. No one said anything, but the neighbors had to be surprised when the corn came through. I chopped most of the field. It was appraised at 190 bu/a. The corn that was picked was a little higher in moisture around 25%. My only problem is seeing the marker. The guy that combines my corn chuckles a bit because I get lost alot and some rows get wide and some get crossed until I figure out where I'm at. good luck! |
