North Central Kentucky
Dad is one of 11 who grew up on the farm we are farming now. Grandma, out of necessity I suppose, could cook like none other. Fortunately, I was very close to her and was able to learn some of the tricks. I can make iron skillet cornbread like nobody's business. I'm pretty good with some of her other recipes too. However, some of them are now lost forever. She used to make yeast cinnamon rolls from scratch. I have the recipe, but something is missing. I have tried and tried....
I remember making one of her dishes once and her coming over for dinner. I said "I used your recipe, but it doesn't taste like yours"

She tasted it and said "It doesn't have any Cumin in it."

"But Cumin isn't in the recipe," I said.

With a half smile she said. "Recipes are just jumping off points..."

That is the problem I keep running into now. Lots of the recipes are close, but some aren't quite right. I wish she had adjusted her recipe cards when she adjusted her recipes!
