Near-north Ontario, French River | I think you hit it on the head wildbuckwheat, many schools fail at teaching intuition skills, or more accurately the thought processes behind solving math problems. By the age of 10 kids should have a strong handle on adding and subtracting, and be able to think themselves through the multiplication/division process. If they understand the basic problem solving skills involved in math, then it doesn't matter if they are multiplying 2x3 or a 13250784259887 x 2348545. The only difference between the two equations is the size of the numbers. the thought process that goes into solving them is identical. Those same concepts and processes carry right into algebra etc... If schools fail at the basics, it's an uphill battle from then on. |
