Google "Bust my Bumpers" and you will find a bunch of others chatting about this subject.
BTW,in the UK and in the EU trains use a different type of hitch between rail cars and locomotives and each car or engine has two bumpers the keep them physically touching and absorb shocks when starting, stopping and turning.

This wikipedia shows the EU type of rail car coupling and here the refer to the "bumpers" as buffers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffers_and_chain_coupler
