Everyone has a choice.
You can work somewhere for a wage and know what the size of your paycheque will be as long as the business you work for is profitable and does not close it's doors.
When/if it closes you might be lucky and get a severance payment but that is it.
Then you have to look for another job.

Farming like any small business means you have to have capital to begin and then you have to keep adding to that capital investment to remain competitive.
So in many cases the drain of income into reinvesting/recapitalizing your business reduces what you can 'spend' on yourself.
Fortunately most farmers enjoy farming so much they look at the reinvestment of their income in the business as a pleasant thing, a reward to themselves.

In farming there are always going to be good times and bad times for a variety of reasons.
Getting a good crop when prices are up can set you up for several years IF you spend the extra income on the right things.
Buying a bigger combine and tractor with payments to continue into the next 5 or more years with the profit from the good year making the down payment can easily mean the future will be bleak financially unless those machines earn you more money and are not just to impress the neighbours.

You have to make decisions on a business basis and if you are not happy with the return, either financial or emotional, then you will be better off working for a wage not as a self employed business person.
