Death comes to us all. Life's but a walking shadow | Remember Russia is the largest oil exporter (if I remember right) and clearly has the most to lose. When you list all the "positives" that come to the West and the Gulf states what other conclusion can you come to? Russia (with Iran) is blocking any settlement of the Syrian situation, Russia is waging a war of territorial acquisition in Ukraine (and by extension the whole of Eastern Europe). The European economies are stagnated in part by the high price of fuel (what better way to put trillions of Euros into the pockets of consumers than cut the price of fuel without any central bank intervention). The list goes on. Putting the squeeze on a few oil drillers in North Dakota and Texas is a minor almost insignificant positive side effect of the whole operation.
The beautiful thing about this is the complete deniability. It was triggered by the Saudis simply announcing that they won't cut production. There was nothing overtly aggressive toward Russia (or Iran). And of course if someone accuses the Saudis they can alway justify their position by saying they opposed drilling in ND. That's not war that's just business. |
