I run them in middle, about 3 degrees.

I'm all no-till have all sorts of soil conditions and covers and the only time I've had closing issues are in heavy cover crops and clay soils when it was way too wet to be planting. We have lots of stones and I've had them catch stones twice in the couple thousand acres I've been using them. About as often as the OEM wheels.

But yeah, to your question, for me except in the most extreme conditions they close perfectly. If they're not closing in average conditions I'd think something else is wrong.
