Fontanelle, IA
I run my Thompson's in the 3 degree position (angled down @ 45 degrees toward soil) on first my 1760 and now on a 1770. I have the reduced tension spring on the closing wheel frames and have never had an issue closing the trench (tough, sticky clay soils) in the least pressure notch. With the JD original spring, I could make the 6 degree and later the 3 degree position really pulverize that sidewall WITHOUT digging up seed and ruining the trench bottom. I'm thinking of removing either 1 or both of the wedges in 2015 and running a few stand counts and ultimate ear counts at fall. Great product for my farm with how I want to farm! Just my $.02....

2 questions: where is your hitch height set? drawbar or 2 pt? How worn are your parallel linkages? It sounds as though the row units are pitched forward/back en up..... What planter? Is your spring downpressure or air down pressure uniform? Curious because Thompsons work excellent for me.
