Subject: RE: Trading corn stalks for manure

southern MN
Cover crops are great in temperate climates. Here in MN, get the corn harvested, rake bale and stack the round bales, and there will be several frosts and frozen ground 9 out of 10 years, there won't be any cover crop in this area in this program. Its a great idea where it works, if this was on wheat or silage ground sure, possibly once in a while on an early soybean ground if you are lucky.

But it gets cold up here, east or west of us even not so bad. But right here in Minnesota, there just won't be any cover crop after field corn, there is that tongue of cold that settles down early on is.

Folks just don't understand a cold climate, a short summer.

Neighbor trades a few acres of stalks for beef manure, the one with cattle collects the stalks and spreads the manure, neighbor pays a little extra for the manure. I wouldn't mind finding that deal.
