Subject: Can anyone tell me why certified wheat seed always seems to yield better?

Anamoose, ND
Maybe it is just our farm but it always seems that when we put bin run spring wheat seed side by side with certified seed the certified seed always seems to yield better. I have had plenty of years where we buy certified seed and the variety does very well the first year so we save seed and the following year(s) never seem to out yield the first year given similar growing conditions.

So what is it about certified seed that may give it a yield advantage? I always thought the wheat we produce and save for seed is of good quality. We never save any seed that has been sprayed with glyphosate preharvest. I have always sent seed samples to the local grain inspection service for the full run down on germ, vigor, seed size, ect....

Thanks.
