Ripley, Ontario Canada | I am a long ways from North Dakota but I assume you get cold and lots of wind. I would build an insulated concrete house. They are tighter and easier to heat. If I had to stick to a budget I would spend the $ on the shell of the house and decent exterior finish and cheapen the interior. If you have little ones the interior is going to take a pounding anyhow, so replacing cabinets and fixtures is going to happen anyhow, doing it in a nice solid building will still make sense.
You are going to have to dig half a basement in ND anyhow for footings, might as well go a couple feet deeper and clean out the hole. Even if you don't fully finish it, it can be your mud room, laundry, kids play room, pantry, junk room (wait don't call it that, that name greatly increases the amount of junk it collects) and this all saves space off the main floor. | |
