I knew about the spaces, and the way to link. My question is if my file is located in a folder and I'm going back to index, the link is ../whatever. If I'm on the index page and click in that link, doesn't it take me to a file that doesn't exist

Yes. So you either need to hardcode a different link in the Homepage, or you need to use a script that can detect whether you're on the Homepage and then display the correct link. HTML can't do this, but scripting languages can (Javascript, PHP, ASP, etc.)
