We had a JD gp with a cultivator like that.  There were no scratchers behind the tires as on our later set ups.  If that cultivator was like mine, you had to stand up and push the lever forward and lock it when you came to the end.  It would catch on a detent and the you had to squeeze the handle and pull hard back to get it in the ground again after you turned. 

It made for a very long day and probably one reason I still have a strong back and arms today.  Everything was labor intensive back when I was starting.
