Are you sure that the measured CEC was higher than the calculated CEC?
It is often the other way around if your soil was recently limed.
If your measured CEC really was higher than the calculated CEC, explanations include:
1) your soil is very acid and has a lot of pH dependent charge.
Measured CECs are determined at a standard pH (e.g., 7.0) which may be significantly higher than your field pH.
Generally speaking, a soil's CEC will increase when the soil's pH is raised but the actual relationship varies depending on the soil humus content and clay mineralogy.
2) Your calculated CEC did not include 1 or more significant cations

calculated CECs are sometimes called effective CECs... and represent the CEC under current soil conditions rather than at a standardized pH.
measured CEC and calculated CEC both have value... preference for one or the other depends on how you want to use the result.
