15 years ago there was a big push for people switching to seasonal grazing. It was almost like a religious movement as they told us that the only dairy farms that are going to survive is the grazing herds. Now those herds are far a few between. I never tried it as our land isn't suitable for grazing. My belief is that in Wisconsin the season is just to short. Some tried wintering them outside but it really took a toll on the cows in a harsh winter. Then they built a freestall barns and from there on it seemed that once you make that investment you had better use it year around.
