Breckinridge Co. , Kentucky | Had 17 Longhorn cows bought for $650 each, bred to Charolais bull. Made some of the prettiest calves you could ask for, mostly creme colored with a few that would have a old type Simmental color pattern. Cows were real easy going and only bad was accidently getting hit by an errant horn when feeding a little grain to check on em. Calves were easy going also and backgrounded just like my regular beef calves. Would take a $.10-.20 dock compared to beef calves, difference in cow prices more than offset the lower price. Downside to the cows, horns in chutes and alleys ( looking back I should have taken the horns down short), as mentioned above the cows can jump like Holstein steers, and by far the worst trait that I dealt with was the absolute pain in the ass to try to separate cows! Maybe not all but my Longhorn cows could not stand to be separated and could use the horns to go thru any fence like it wasn't there or jump it. If my situation ever got to where I could set everything up like I want it and I could buy the cows for the right price, I would get back in with some Longhorns and keep back x bred heifers. Never calving issues. |
