IMHO, IH reacted poorly in the early '60s to John Deere's introduction of the New Generation of Power which set the tone for the next two decades. What did they have to counter that? Yes, the 06 series was a step forward with more transmission speeds than the previous model series and was probably enough for the mid-60s, but that remained unchanged through 56/66/86 series except for the style and position of the levers. At least by the 86 series they should have had synchronous gears for the 1-4 speeds and beefed up the Torque Amplifier to compete with the Quad Range, although that would not have been an answer to the JD Power Shift. The 86 cabs were a nice step forward in comfort, except that they were a bit too far forward and it took some getting used to using that mirror to hook up an implement. The latest JD models repeat that engineering idea. As I don't care for it, I think that a good 55 series JD will suit me until I'm too old to care!
