Death comes to us all. Life's but a walking shadow | USDA is calling for a Nebraska corn yield of 181 bu/A on 9,300,000 A this year as opposed to a a 169 bushel per A on 9,950,000 last year. This means the total production will be almost the 1.678 billion vs. 1.681 billion for this year. I would guess that it doesn't make much sense to pay to truck (or rail) corn from Ill. to Neb. when they can just pay a little more to keep their facility operating.
It is actually somewhat ironic. The real surplus of grain is in or near Ill. Away from there in both directions there really isn't all that much extra grain. Given the cost of transportation and the logistic difficulties all that extra grain might not be so useful for other endusers.
We get accustomed to thinking that the price is national and global but there are still very distinct regional markets.
Edit: correct 2013 acres from incorrect 9,659,000 to correct 9,950,000.
