I saw a news program once where they were interviewing convicted thieves and then drove them around to places and they pointed out houses where they would and would not try to rob. Was rather straight forward. Tall bushes, overgrown landscape, hidden from view, no lights... those places were targeted. Lights, close to the road and other people, and dogs were stayed away from.
Just saw a video clip on a morning new show that showed someone walking through a back yard. He went out of sight and came back looking around then you saw and heard this Yorkie running toward him and barking and he leaped over the fence to get out of the yard. It was pretty funny to see his tall guy casing the place and then running from a 9 lb lap dog.
