I have a cheap 1-GB data plan on my iPad, think it's $20/month.  It is sufficient for planting, so long as you are not doing a bunch of Youtube or something like that as well.  I did hit the limit on that using Yieldsense recently and ended up tethering to my phone's data plan for awhile.  Of course, there's a lot more hours running an 8 row corn head over the same acres as a 24 row planter.

midwest is correct that you can use Fieldview and make maps without an interweb connection.  However, something that really surprised me after already using equipment that made coverage maps is just how handy it is to have that Google Earth background.  If all you farm is flat square 80s, maybe not a big deal, but it sure is nice to have that feel for exactly where you are in odd-shaped farms.  Especially after dark.
