Subject: Inside a GPS antenna

Cedar Rapids, Iowa
I'm one of those people that likes to know how things work. When something breaks, I've been known to take it apart to have a look inside. I finally had the opportunity to open up a broken GPS antenna, and below is what the actual antenna element looks like. It's mainly just a printed circuit board. The magic is in the way the copper is isolated to be able to pick up specific frequency bands.

The board in my hand probably only costs a couple dollars to make. The components to connect it to a coax cable cost more. Then it goes in a waterproof enclosure, which isn't trivial to make. The main expense is the massive amount of research and testing needed to figure out what design is optimal for picking up the desired signals, plus the various certification tests the final product needs to go through (FCC, CE, ROHS, etc).
