Sorry I can't help you but that is a good combine to preserve.  Not many of those left.

Is that a #123? Gravity dump grain tank, rear tires together like row crop tractor . Grandfather drove a #125, 1953 vintage, larger single tires, had an unload auger, non folding.
3 forward gears, slow, too fast and slow road gear. Always thought Deere was light years ahead with the #55.

I bet you only fill the auxiliary grain tank too full one time on that model. Corn shower down the back!

Try cutting wheat in December of 1959. Not much heat from the engine got up to the operator's platform. I wanted a spinner knob for the steering wheel but Dad would't buy one. After the steering wheel got ripped out of my hands a few times when those tricycle rear wheel hit a frozen gopher mound I decided I wanted to keep my thumbs.

Ask around at dealerships if they know of a retired mechanic who would like a project like that.  It's a neat machine.  It looks like it is all there.

Wish I could help on the restoration- I sure would love to, if I had the space and spare time to do so.  If it would be of any help, I DO have a parts catalog for the 123-SP that I got with some other stuff on an ebay purchase.

Wow, I remember that one of our neighbors had one of those IH combines back in the 1950's when self-propelled combines were first coming to that neck of the woods in Indiana.

You forgot the missing gas cap.  Someone left it off and probably has caused the fuel system to get chaff in it.  It's gonna need a new fuel filter!

There is one just like that in an old salvage yard here, it may be a 125 or 151.

Check with your surrounding FFA chapters. Might be an ag class willing to take this on. Put everything in writing, offer them incentives, so much money when 1/4 of the way, 1/2 way and then completed. Find when they are working on it in the evenings and take them a bunch of pizzas. Could be a win win situation for all involved.

If you don't find anyone I can restore it, but unfortunately it will be nearly two years before I have an opening. This is the one I finished last year...

Crawford County, Robinson, Illinois

Dad lived in Edwards County, Illinois  when that IH 123 sp came out.  He bought the first one available after the war years, drove it around the race track for the local dealer to show off during the County Fair.  I spent many an hour on that machine eating dirt.  Not a bad combine at the time, I recall the very long bent rod that shifted the transmission deep in the combine.

Dad painted his in 1950, sold in 1957.  Neighbor bought it, probably still has it but I haven't seen it in 40 years.

Someone said something about corn, I don't believe a corn head was ever available for that model.  For years the farmers in the area believed a corn head would tear up a combine, and stayed with pickers long after everybody else was combining corn.  We were surprised the corn in the combine caused less damage and power loss than weedy beans before herbicides.

Nice pics.  Hesston made several attachments to turn them into a more user friendly combine.  These are from over at Redpowermagazine.
