Subject: RE: Flashback: The race to 100 bushel corn

NW Illinois Stephenson county
I remember back in the '60's, our bottom flooded and the corn could not emerge because of 1 1/2" crust of silt on the surface. So Dad replanted it and he grew his first over 100 bu. crop. Not too many years later I grew several over 200 bu. crops using pioneer 3780. It was quite a few years later before that field came close to 200 bu./a again.

Topography of bottom ground has changed dramatically over the years. Dad put a riser on a clay tile outlet that was 3' below the water's surface and 12' below the field's surface. This was a hand dug tile. I have been told hand dug tile was usually put in a spade and 1/2 with a tiling spade. I wonder how many feet of tile would be put in now if it was hand dug?
