I think a gallon to a newborn calf is way too much.  It may regurgitate and inhale.  Plus the volume and weight may physically damage/torsion intestinal tract.  Depending on calf size, one to two quarts at a time is sufficient.  Smaller amounts more often also leads to better digestion and less chance of scours....
