tillage releases a ton of carbon into the atmosphere by means of carbon dioxide. http://link.springer.com/article/10.1023%2FA%3A1009766510274
it also increase P and soluble K losses Tillage is like smokeless fire in reguards to carbon trapping and organic matter accumulation. Of course long term notill has major sustainability problems because of everything from soil temperature to major disease problem. So tillage is used as a happy medium between sustainable soil and sustainable farming (enough yield not to file bancrupcy) Fire can be a great replacement for tillage and increase yield in many cases. Just have to use it responsibly. Anyone that gets upset about fire should get equally upset over normal tillage practices (notill is the norm here but I heard a rumor that tillage is alive and will in west central iowa)
