Subject: RE: Grazing some janky fescue - curly haired bulls

Driftless SW Wisconsin

This is my registered (43294283) Huth bull.  I purchase a bull from Jerry Huth every 3 or 4 years to keep some fresh genetics coming into my herd. My retained bulls out of other sires breed his heifers.

No I have not weaned calves yet. I am retaining most of my heifers so I am leaving them on the cows longer this year. Leaving calves longer on the cow (beyond the standard 205 days) is said to improve the mature animal's rumen development and grazing capacity. (Gearld Fry)

I think you are wise to put more pounds on them yourself if you have the grass. Note the $2.57 paid for 900 lbers NHTC in another thread on this page.

Is there any way you could reduce the area open to your herd and go to more rotational grazing? The problem with them going back to the same spot for the tender grass is that pretty soon you will have no more tender grass...

Are you retaining heifers?

Jim
