Not sure that the outdated Mississippi lock and dam system plays as big of role in exports as people think. For example this last week 909 grain barges were unloaded at NOLA. Total barge traffic through the last locks(lock 27 on Mississippi at Granite City IL, lock 52 on the Ohio north of Cairo Il and lock 1 on the Arkansas River) was 420. Now I realize there is a lag on barges making it down river, but there is a large amount of exported grain that never has to go through locks or only has to go through a few locks. The only months where the barges through the last locks approach or are the same as the number of barges unloaded at NOLA occurs in May, June, July, and Aug.
