Subject: Wifi Bridge, Access Point... Help?

Central Nebraska
I get confused with many of the network terms and need some help.
I have 2 issues. First I would like better Wifi in the house. My internet access comes into my basement office. That is where my current wireless router sits. The main floor living room across the house get minimal wifi signal. What do I need to get better signal. New router? A second router hooked up as a bridge? (is that the right term?) My current router is a Belkin purchased from a big box store.
Second, I would like Wifi access in and around our yard, up to 250 yards away from the house. What do I need for this? Is this where an access point comes in? Or is this another bridge? I am not shooting the signal to a specific point, just general area.

Thanks.
