A few years ago, while planting in about 10" tall wheat stubble, I saw a small hawk do an almost vertical dive on something. When it hit the ground, it just stood there motionless, with outstretched wings resting on top of the stubble.
I got off the tractor to examine. A single wheat stalk had punctured the hawk's lower abdomen (the soft part below the breast). It had penetrated about two inches upward into the chest cavity. The little hawk was stone dead.
