If we have an alternator that goes bad, we take it to a rebuild shop about 20 miles from us. Most of the time there is just a small diode or a bad wire that's the problem. They will diagnose that and fix it for a fraction of the cost of new or "factory rebuilt". And if it is not fixable, they will tell you that right away and not waste your time (or money).
