You can have good wheat planted all the way to Nov 15th.   The biggest thing is dry ground.  If you mud it in, then chances of success are near zero.  Go with at least 2million/acre.  3+bu/a ish.  And it all depends on the fall.   If it does not tiller this fall, be prepared to put most your N on a green up next spring.  That will help in tiller.

 

As to the production cost here's an example.   If you buy seed-  Seed $50, weed and fungicide $35, Starter if you do $70, top dress N $70, rent + machinery cost.   Could be around $425.  90 bu @ $6 is $540.
