Subject: Cover Crop with Calves pictures

These cover crops were planted the 8th and 9th of August. The pictures of the cow pasture areas show 15 pounds of oats, two pound of radish seed, 3 pound of Sunflower and 3 pounds of sedan grass and some volunteer wheat. The turnips were spread by hand close to the house. Across the fence from the pasture where growth is taller the calves do not have access.

The big fields are planted with two pound of radish, 13 pounds of oats, 13 pounds of cow peas, 5 pounds of sun hemp and 11 pounds of soybeans...3 pounds of sunflower and some volunteer wheat.

The soybeans had their germination killed when I mixed them in the grinder mixer. The cow peas and sun hemp came up, but the weather was too cold in August to flourish. I probably won't use them next year because they were unreliable...needed hotter weather. The oats, radish, sunflower and sedan grass did very well. The calves really like the mix. We have seen radishes greater than 4 inches where the calves are and every radish that has been dug up has fishing worms next to them (for fishermen out there).

We put the calves in on the pasture on Sept 1st. The first five calves were born around the 4th of July. They have really done well on the cover...they really liked the oats and have now started to eat the radish tops and now really eat the radishes. We have 5 cows in two acres and will probably get two and a half months out of the pasture.
