Sanilac Co. Michigan | Three or four years ago the guys at Star of the West were recommending 30# of actual N in the fall. I think it was to help establish more fall tillers and get a little more top growth going into winter dormancy. I usually end up pretty close to that if I put down 100# of 10-34-0 with the drill and broadcast 250# of 8-24-24+s. Seems to work pretty well for me, but can't say it's absolutely required for top yields either. Just a swag, but I'd guess 20# of N would likely be enough that you'd never notice the difference.
Question: Are you no tilling into oat stubble, or are you working it down before wheat? Also, did you bale off the oat straw? I'd guess if you no tilled into the oat stubble or did not remove the straw then the extra N would be beneficial in helping break down the residue this fall/early winter, and not tie up some of the N you intend to apply next spring in that process. | |
