Subject: Need a little help with a math question.

Southwest Iowa
My sister-in-law just called me and she's trying to help a 6th grader out with a math problem. I'm not sure if I understand it all correctly so I thought Id post it here and see what kind of answers I get.

3 guys stranded on an island. Crate of bananas washes on shore. Each guy eats 1/3 of the bananas and there are 8 remaining. How many bananas were originally in the crate?

To me, there isn't enough info to correctly answer the question. Does the 1st guy eat 1/3 of the original number but the 2nd guy eat 1/3 of the remaining bananas since the 1st guy already got his fill? If each guy eats 1/3 of the original number, there wouldn't be any remaining bananas at the end, would there?

I'm sure it's simple and I'm putting too much thought into it, but it'll drive me crazy until I find out the answer. If you could, please tell me how you arrived at your answer in case the little guy/girl needs to show their work. Also, so I can understand it better too!

Thanks
