Cleveland, MS. Own small farm near Booneville, MS | My dad started milking cows in the late 1950s by hand. He and my older brother would milk about 30-40 head every morning before my brother got on the school bus at 7:00 a.m. By the early 60s he had bought a milking machine that attached the milkers on the cows' udders to a 10 gallon milk can. Once filled, they put the cans in a cooler that had cold water in it. I don't remember how often, but a "milk truck" came by to pick up the full cans and drop off emptys. The truck was just a standard box truck with no refrigeration. Thankfully, my dad got out of the milking business and switched to beef cattle before I got big enough to help. Unfortunately, he then went into the hog business. Man, that stunk! |
