Nova Scotia
There is a very easy way to fix it, you need to get him to do 3 things for you,

1 get him to make a budget for the 2015 year, don't be shy on letting him have all the payments that the farm makes and, make sure he breaks everything down to per acre cost or pound of gain, you will be doing one anyway, so the two of you can sit down after and compare, if there is no problems with his then you are good, if there is you can show him how bad math and bad management can put us at a loss which could take away what he loves, basically it's a if you were in charge today this is what would happen, so maybe if your going to be a great farmer you need to improve your skills.

2, hold him to a standard, if he keeps him grades above 80 percent he can drive tractors and take Fridays off, if they fall below, he gets no tractor work, and has to go 5 days a week, and be straight with him, if he thinks he's so smart he should have no problem doing what the rest of the kids in this country do, it's like picking rock, or forking out a broken manure spreader, no one wants to do it, but if your a man you know it has to be done, so there is no sense wasting anymore time than needed on it by doing it half ass,

3 get him to write up a businesses plan for $50,000 for some farm project he would like to start to make money, take it to the bank, lending company ect, wherever you deal with, when he gets shot down a few times it will show him he needs to be better at this end of the operation if he is going to grow the farm, let the lending guys say no to them, this will show him what is waiting for him in the real world and he needs to always be the smartest guy in the room.
