Subject: RE: Getting born to farm kids to study at school

East central Iowa

How about showing him how important and education is to farming?

For example have him figure out how many gallons of water he will need to spray 80 acres.  And to make it interesting tell him what nozzles your using, the pressure and the ground speed.

Or have him looking at some charts of grain prices over the last 5 years on a monthly basis and find which month usually has the highest price.

Or figure the cost of production for an acre, give him the units applied of N,P,K and the price per ton for each.  Then give him the number of kernels in a bag of seed corn and the price of a bag, then ask how much per acre it will cost to plant at 33,000 and throw in the discounts for volume and different months.  Then based on those discounts is it better to borrow the money at 5.6% for the time to get the discount or better to wait and pay the price at planting.

I'll bet there are a lot of things related to history too, such as the effect on farm prices from the embargo back in 1980 and the development of Brazilian farming as a result.

He might discover there's a lot more to farming than driving a GPS driven tractor.

edited to correct throw rather than through
