The start safety switch is operated by the cam that shifts ranges. If the linkage to the dash is worn, it might not be getting all the way to neutral, otherwise the cam may be worn or have slipped a bit further into the transmission and just isn't closing the switch. Since slamming the shifter made it work once, my bet is that the shift linkage isn't shifting the cam all the say to neutral. You can shove on the arm on that shaft behind the right side battery to check if the linkage is worn. That linkage is KNOWN to wear.
