Hwy 35 from La Crosse, north along the Mississippi along the bluffs up to St Croix falls is very nice.  They don't call this God's country for nothing!   Further south on 35 by Prarie du Chien is very nice as well.  Timing is a crap shoot, but today, Oct.5- 10 is a reasonable guess   Really depends on frost
