I do something similar for storing flower bulbs in the basement. I put some dry leaves in one of those big blue plastic storage containers and layer the bulbs in the dry leaves. Leave the top kind of loose. They stay in suspended animation in those leaves for a long time. Sometimes a couple of years. My friend packs tomatos and potatos in sawdust and they stay good for months that way.
