Did you mute the sound in a particular program prior to doing update ?

I just saw something on laptop similar to this. (It's XP though

Was using laptop to play a DVD movie while away and muted the movie for an interrupting phone call. Closed the movie playing program and turned off computer.

When I tried playing other WMV clips and such I had no sound.  Speaker control showed full volume no muting no x through speaker anywhere. Thought something had happened with sound card or speakers. Then I remembered muting in the movie playing program. I reopened it and unmuted and had the sound back.

Mot sure how the one program controls over rode everything else on laptop.

I doubt this is your problem but thought it worth mentioning.

BTW I hate Windows updates also. Soon as I get everything set and working how I want then update messes something up. Sometimes I think the updates are just more vulnerabilities and hacks to assure you continue to buy more solutions to the problems they keep creating and installing with updates. I'm cynical anymore but nothing really surprises me either.
