You got it easy. When we got out (temporarily going on 7 years) we were pulling a Monosem 4 row bed till on a Massey Ferguson 399. Now, we are planning to pull a two row twin row on a two row rip strip. Around here, the most common setups are 4 to 6 row rip strip planter combinations that take anywhere from 150 to 250+ horse to pull, and it still stalls the tractors on clay hills. If you want to see those tractors roll smoke though, set them on a chisel plow pulling the drill behind them.

Conventional corn, notil beans. Last year we had a 16-31 1790 Deere on the Challenger 35 at about 225 pto hp and a 900 CIH 16-30 on the 7700 Deere 2wd at about 155 pto hp. This year the 35 will be on a 1200 CIH 24-30 and the 16-30 900 will be on an MT635 mfwd which is supposed to be about 160 pto hp. Hope we get to use them someday. Over the years we have owned it, this planter has been pulled by a 4430 at 140 hp, the 7700 first at 125 hp and then at 155, a 7120 mfwd with a heck of a lot of hp, and then the 35. We planted with a 7200 8-30 on the 4430 before that, and a 7000 6-30 which we pulled on a bridge hitch behind a field cultivator with the 4430, or alone with a 4010 Deere at about 110 hp. The very first planter tractor was a 2010 Deere with 47 pto hp pulling a 694A 6-30.

It's a 404 which takes it to 96 hp rated, wasn't that at 1900 rpm??? not sure if they were rated at PTO speed or at rated RPM and overspeed PTO...Bob or ron, do you remember? I had never thought this through until just now, but if they were rated at PTO speed, then 114 at 2200 is really not much hotter then oem....most of the increase is due to the increased RPM.... but at any rate it seems to be about all the fuel the engine will take without improving the breathing somehow.

They were rated at the 2200 engine rpm. Best I can recall (memory sucks) they gained another horse or two at rated PTO speed at 1900. I think our 4020 (1968) was rated at about 94 at rated engine rpm and it made 95 or 96 at 1900 (slightly better hphpg at 1900 also). On naturally aspirated engines of that era an 8-10% backup torque (at aboujt 1500 rpm) in a Diesel was good and non-existent in a gasser. That is why the Diesels would always outwork the gas equivalent in horsepower. Gas fell on its face anything under rated rpm.

This year It is going to be a JD 8650 with a 3600 Kinzie 16-32. Some no-till, some conventional corn, all no-till beans. This is quite a step back, as the last few years I have been planting with a 9220. But with most of the fields washed badly, we are going to be working more ground with a finishing tool rather than using a rotary harrow, and We are afraid that the finishing tool will pull the guts out of the 8650.

Say Chad, how long have you guys been in 20" rows? We have been in 20's since '04. But it doesn't seem like we are pulling any better yields than 30's. We have been pondering switching back to 30's. Have you seen many guys switch back to 30's. Like the 20's because we plant all our soys with it too.

Started the 20" rows in 2003. Yields have been the same or very close. Not enough to warrant the extra weight and maitenance. Main reason for the switch was for beans. We've got a 30" planter on order for next year and will likely be going back to another air seeder. The 20" push hasn't been real big in our area. Only a couple guys around us. 25 miles to the west and there were a lot of guys that did and do it, but I know several have gone back to 30".
