W Texas | Not sure exactly what you are asking. Of course you are going to cut it this year. Are you asking if you should cut now and try to get one more cut this year? Or about timing if only cutting once?
My opinion: wait and cut it once only, in about two weeks (weather permitting). Don't get on it if the ground is wet. New meadows are very susceptible to equipment damage. That will give it some time to establish a better root system before you get on it with heavy equipment. Will also give it a little time to recover before first frost. I would try to go for one good cutting, rather than two clippings. Also would not want to cut near first frost, as frost on the windrowed hay will damage it and delay dry down, increase chances for the hay getting rain on, etc.
If you cut it now, might get 1 ton. In two weeks over 1.5 ton and probably still top notch quality, as a new meadow is not likely to bloom very early this time of year. | |
