Medicine Mound,TX | We can still eek out a living on irrigated putting it in the loan. Dryland is a slot machine. It usually just takes your money. There is basically nothing much else we can grow here. To hot for corn, alfalfa takes to much water, hogs eat the milo before you can combine it. No market for specialty crops. Wheat makes money once every 20 years. Our soil is to tight for peanuts. So, I guess I will plant cotton. It is what we are set up to do. It would take a string of bad bad years to change that I think. If I lived somewhere else it wouldn't be so hard to let go. Was at a meeting and the speaker said we shouldn't be growing cotton here. I think his thoughts were we should put everything in grass and raise cows. He is a cow guy and not a farmer. I don't know maybe it will come to that. Best thing about a cotton plant is it doesn't get out on the highway at 3am. | |
