Subject: RE: feeding out your own calves

Central Alberta
There is one advantage to finishing your own calves. When you buy a group of mixed calves bring them home get them settled on feed and growing you can lose anywhere form 1-4 weeks of gain on the cattle depending on the group. Buying calves at auction that have been with out feed for 3 days will eat a lot for a short time and not gain a thing. Also there can be some health problems with a bought group. Now with your own calves you can skip out on a lot of this. In the past I have fond my own calves would finish at least a month sooner than a bought group at the same weight. Now how much does it cost to feed that calf for that extra month???
