Farmers in the western industrialized countries have money for inputs beyond the seed - fertility/micros/herbicides/insecticides - that farmers of the underdeveloped countries do not.
The germs that do fantastic when well fed/watered, don't work in lower fertility near desert conditions, etc.
In spite of the allure of new markets in Asia/Africa, Europe/USA/South America is the bread and butter of the big seed companies.
They need to remain competitive here to fund research there, so I would not expect any major change in R&D for us.
