Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska | I expect that to happen again. I had an uncle that told me 40 years ago what he had witnessed where land was broke out to be farmed in the 20'and 30's and the government came along and paid to have that land put into the soil bank program in the 50's. During the grain boom of the 70's that land was tore up only to be planted back to grass in the CRP era of the 80's. In the last 10 years I've seen the same land broke up and farmed again. With a few years of low prices I'm sure I will see it planted back to grass again in another CRP type program. I know some guys who have recently broke out whole pastures with the intent of putting it back into grass and "renting" it back to the government at farmland rental rates at double to triple what they could have received for pasture land rental rates. Their counting on it to retire on or go buy other land and I think it will probably happen. |
