Subject: How green is too green for corn on a silage pile above ground?

just a tish NE of central ND
Actual Scenario...... old chopper guy year after year finished his corn silage first at drying down time or after killing frost and mine got left until froze and leaves blew away. He did the best he could with what he had to work with. Silage pile was always good.
New chopper guy wants to get started earlier and close to home to see that everything works and likes getting going as there is one crew and many silage growers. Someone has to be first and someone has to be last. I think Id rather be first for a while instead of always last.

HOW GREEN is TOO green for silage piled on the ground without a bunker. We did some early chopping last year and it was green(not this green though) but this years might be even greener. It seemed that the cows preferred the dryer stuff. What do you all think? Take the opportunity to get it done or have to wait in line offer killing frost for weeks? There are no dents at all in the kernels and its quite milky and soft yet. Greener looking than a Golf course!
